CERVANTES
FIVE POINTS
Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom is located at 2637 Welton Street in the old Casino Caberet whose history dates back to the Cotton Club days of the 1930s when jazz greats such as Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Benny Goodman took the stage when they toured through Denver. Over the years the Casino Caberet has hosted such acts as James Brown, BB King, Ray Charles, Ike & Tina Turner, and countless others. Cervantes has continued the musical legacy of the building and neighborhood ever since the grand opening in January 2003. The sister venues, Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom and Cervantes Other Side have collectively served the music community for eight years and have played host to over 3,000 live shows including intimate performances with Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes, Derek Trucks, Dr. John, Sam Bush, Page McConnell of Phish, Branford Marsalis, and Warren Haynes to name a few.
Five Points was the first predominately African-American neighborhood in Denver, Colorado. It was home to over 50 bars and clubs in the Roaring '20s, 1930s, '40s, and '50s. Two of these buildings, The Rossonian Hotel and Benny Hooper's Casino, now Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom, played major roles as venues for jazz musicians. Benny Hoopers became famous for its after-hours jazz scene and some of the greatest jazz musicians, Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Nat King Cole, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles, Muddy Waters, Fats Domino, Ike & Tina Turner, James Brown, and Miles Davis all played at the Casino.
Benny Hooper, known throughout the neighborhood as The Mayor Of Five Points was directly responsible for Five Points gaining the reputation as the Harlem of the West, for its long jazz history and also being mentioned frequently in Jack Kerouacs On the Road.
Benny Hooper was born in Five Points on May 2, 1893 and he held various jobs around Denver until serving his country during World War I. Upon his return from the War, he opened the Ex-Servicemens Club, now Cervantes Other Side, with the Army pay that he had saved during his time served. During the relatively flush 1920s, Benny added a bar, billiard room and a basement jazz joint to his Ex-Servicemens Club.
During the 1930s, Benny opened the Casino Dance Hall, now Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom, next door to the Ex-Servicemans Club. The Casino evolved into a two-story hall with balcony seating for 1,000, a 40-foot-long bar, and a huge hardwood dance floor.

The Living Legends crew is a family of independent hip-hop creators. From primary earth bases in Los Angeles and Oakland, the Legends extend worldwide and beyond. It all started with BFAP (now known as Sunspot Jonz) and PSC (Luckyiam), who laid claim to the name of Mystik Journeymen in the early 1990s. By '94 they were locally legendary for throwing Underground Survivors shows, houseparty style at their loft - 4001 San Leandro Street in East Oakland. That's where the Grouch hooked up with the Journeymen in 1995, just before they took off on their renowned first European tour. Around the same time in the southern part of the state, Mid-city Los Angeles to be exact, 3 Melancholy Gypsys (Murs, Scarub & Eligh) were part of the almost mythic Log Cabin crew going back to 1993. Log Cabin later broke up and the Gypsys wandered separately. As it turned out, the 3 would cross paths again in the Bay Area and became Living Legends. Aesop came to Oakland from Fresno, Arata from Osaka, and Bicasso from various points, East, West and elsewhere... In 1999 the Legends shifted their center of gravity to Los Angeles, but their presence has definitely not diminished in Oakland and the Bay. You know it makes no difference where they stay because the universe revolves around them anyway. Over the years, the Journeymen and the Legends have rocked Europe, Japan, Australia and Canada numerous times, plus they've toured the USA, north and south, east coast, west coast and beyond ... In the years since the Legends have continued releasing solo and crew projects and now have a catalog of over 50 full-length albums and numerous singles. All in all, this crew of motivated do-it-yourselfers has sold over 200,000 albums collectively. The latest crew album "Creative Differences" has turned in to their best selling album to date, (with Soundscan numbers just under 23,000 so far) and continues to sell. Other recent releases are from CMA (Grouch & Luckyiam), Scarub, and Sunspot Jonz. New projects by Eligh, 3MG, Bicasso and Aesop are expected in 2005. March 8, 2005, will see the release of the Legends highly anticipated new album "Classic," a project the crew got together to record earlier this year. That was the first time in recent memory all 8 members were together with the purpose of recording a new project and what came out of those sessions is definitely their strongest material yet. Expect to see them spring 2005 coming to a city near you on tour promoting the new project. The group has no plans to let up, they're only turning up the fire, see if you can keep up. Legends Baby!!!!
Like a Super Nova burning bright in the night sky comes Karl Densons Tiny Universe. Based out of San Diego, KDTU began its journey in 1998 after bandleader Karl Denson decided to change gears five years after hed help create The Greyboy Allstars. GBA had proven themselves as the ultimate party band, spreading their West Coast Boogaloo style all over the world, making Jazz a dance term once again. Karl set out to take this formula to the next level by putting more emphasis on vocals and adding some funk, r&b and hip hop elements. It turned out to be a winning combination which set KDTU on the top of the heap in the touring world from 1999 through 2005. In 2005 Karl decided to get back to his roots and work in a smaller jazzier setting. During 2006 and 2007 Karl led KD3, a trio configuration featuring Sax, Organ and Drums. This led to the 2007 release of KD3s Lunar Orbit, an album which was a great critical success. In 2008, Karl rejoined his former boss Lenny Kravitz and spent the year country hopping through Europe and North America. In 2009 Karl went back into the studio and conjured up what is being hailed as the most soulful KDTU adventure yet, Brothers Keeper which was released Sept 15th, 2009.
Dynamic, scene-setting electronica youngsters The Pnuma Trio have been known for their forward-thinking compositions and moving, powerful improvisations since their explosion onto the scene in 2004. Not so young anymore, Ben Hazelgrove, Alex Botwin, and Lane Shaw are proud to call STS9s very hot 1320 Records their home as they gear up for a new release in 2010.
With a refined, glitch-informed electro/hip-hop feel and all the dynamic energy of their DJ-killing live show, the new album represents a significantly evolved version of Pnumas futuristic sound; tighter, more focused, and higher resolution. The long synth solos have been replaced by careful layering; instead of building each song to its climax the band percolates on hot remixed urban ideas, letting the production create the spacious atmosphere.
King Pigeon brings together four daring musicians well ahead of their time. Jam music will forever be shaped by the influence of these four trend-setters and seeing them come together on stage as one will be Rock n Roll history in the making. The band consists of Michael Kang from The String Cheese Incident and Panjea, Steve Molitz, the keyboard killer, made famous from his time with Particle and Phil Lesh & Friends, Ron Johnson from The Brett Dennen Band and a very special guest who needs no introduction, Karl Denson.
In glitzy jackets, glittering gloves and 80s regalia, Who's Bad, The Ultimate Michael Jackson Tribute Band, is an infectious party production that takes audiences on a musical expedition spanning three decades of Michael Jackson's chart-cresting music. From ABC to You Rock My World no song is forgotten in this electrifying revival of Pop Music's Royal Highness. Founded in 2004 by Vamsi Tadepalli and spearheaded by some of North Carolina's optimum musicians, Who's Bad has crafted an intricate performance complete with synchronized dance routines, blaring horn section and down-deep rhythms--each delivered with a precision that could only be superseded by the King himself. Since their first standing-room only concert, audiences have crowned them must-see entertainment singing along as if the moves, the music, and the memories belong to us all.
In the past five years, Great American Taxi has become one of the best-known headliners on the jam band circuit. Their uninhibited sound is a swinging concoction of swampy blues, progressive bluegrass, funky New Orleans strut, Southern boogie, honky tonk country, gospel, and good ol fashioned rock n roll. Great American Taxi was born when singer, guitarist, and mandolin player Vince Herman of Leftover Salmon joined keyboard player and singer Chad Staehly for a superstar jam to benefit the Rainforest Action Group in Boulder, in March of 2005. We put together a dream band of the best local musicians for a one-off gig, Herman recalls. It worked so well we had to do it again, and again, and again. Great American Taxi quickly evolved into one of the best country-, rock-, and bluegrass- influenced jam bands in the land, masterfully blending acoustic and electric instruments into music they call Americana Without Borders.
Great American Taxi has been equated with roots rockers like the New Riders of the Purple Sage, Grateful Dead, Wilco, Uncle Tupelo, The Byrds, and Little Feat. Herman finds the comparisons flattering. Were definitely connected to all the acts in the country/rock spectrum, as well as the spirit of Gram Parsons and Woody Guthrie, he says. We want to address the issues appropriate to our times, while making music that gets people up and moving.
Theyve made their reputation as an exciting live band, willing to invite the audience on stage for impromptu jams and sing-alongs. When strangers join in to sing and play, you dont know whats going to happen, Herman grins. It keeps you on your toes musically and brings out feelings of camaraderie and community. That loose, anything-can-happen feel is the hallmark of Reckless Habits, Great American Taxis second album. The band Herman, Staehly, Jim Lewin on electric guitar and vocals, Edwin Hurwitz on bass, and drummer Chris Sheldon spent a couple of weeks at Backbone Studio in Loveland, Co, with producer Tim Carbone (from Railroad Earth) working together to bring the feel of an on-stage performance to the recording process. We did the tracks live, playing together, Herman says. We like to make real music, as opposed to executing parts.
The band is a true democracy, Chad Staehly adds. We tinkered with the tunes on the road, with everybody having input. In the studio, Tim would suggest ideas to make them sound bigger and brighter. Carbone brought in the Black Swan Singers Sheryl Renee, CoCo Brown, and Shelly Lindsey to add gospel flavored backing vocals and the Peak to Freak Horns Justin Jones, sax; Nathan Peoples, sax; Dan Sears, trumpet; Dave Stamps, trombone for some New Orleans-style brass accents as well as pedal steel player Barry Sless (David Nelson Band, Moonalice) and banjo player Matt Flinner.
30 years ago, Kyle Hollingsworth set out on a career in music. Since then, with a wealth of desire and an abundance of ability, Hollingsworth has established himself as a formidable and versatile music talent, with the ability to contribute, collaborate, compose, and communicate on a number of levels and within a vast spectrum of musical environments. Today, as a member of acclaimed jam masters The String Cheese Incident, Hollingsworth is revered by both peers and fans for his ability to write and perform in a mosaic of styles, from rock to classical, ragtime to bebop. Playing in SCI has allowed him unrestricted access to the world of music, and has bestowed on him the kind of fearlessness a composer needs to flirt with such disparate genres. Those whove seen SCI know that they can jerk from funk to bluegrass on a chord change. In the jam world, where there are no set ways of doing things, were not afraid to move in and out of genres, he says, and because of that Ive learned to be creative, not only onstage but in the studio. I can get on board with something pretty quickly. You have to.
His recent release, titled The Theres Now, finds the musician coming in to his own. With solid song material and a slamming new band, Kyle is making his mark in the new, always-evolving music scene. Then Theres Now delivers a blend of vocal and instrumental tunes and seamlessly displays his growth as a musician and as a songwriter.
GREENSKY BLUEGRASS is one of the most exciting bands in todays music scene. Like a breath of fresh air, this five piece band plays traditional bluegrass instruments and uses them to create original songs and soundscapes that are unique and new, yet somehow feel comfortable and familiar. Though they have been likened to 70s era Americana acts like The Band, Greensky would prefer not to be compared to any other bands. We really just try to make music as a group that sounds and feels right to us, says mandolin player Paul Hoffman, later adding that it is nice to know that other people really dig it, too.
Greensky Bluegrass hits timeless targets with deadly accuracy while simultaneously veering off the tired and true highway.-Jambase.com
While green sky is the opposite of blue grass, the band insists that the name came about as more of a pun than a statement about their music. Along with the tradition of bluegrass, we all have lots of different musical influences that we bring to the table, says guitar player Dave Bruzza, and we somehow wanted to reflect that in our name. Upon witnessing the bands live shows, this statement seems to make a little more sense. On any given night, in addition to the myriad of excellent original songs, one might hear traditional bluegrass songs with an exploratory rock and roll jam or selections from the Talking Heads, Jimi Hendrix, The Grateful Dead or Bob Marley turned bluegrass. We are as likely to play a three minute song as we are a ten minute song on any given night, says dobro player Anders Beck, and I think that keeps it exciting for the audience. Perhaps this is the reason that Greensky Bluegrass is as equally embraced by the jam-band community as it is the bluegrass/Americana community and the bands fan base is growing so rapidly.
Of course, this is bluegrass. So manic chops mean a lot to Greensky Bluegrass. Yet they are also masterful storytellers. Mandolinist Paul Hoffman in particular pens some true rural balladry. -Seattle Weekly
Greensky Bluegrass is touring in support of their recently released fourth album, Five Interstates, which was produced by Tim Carbone of Railroad Earth. The album, their strongest to date, features twelve original tracks and one traditional bluegrass song (a nod to the deceased King of Bluegrass, Jimmy Martin) ,and showcases the bands songwriting and playing talents in a way that is incredibly accessible to fans of many different types of music. Carbone notes on the package: Five Interstates came together like five lives intertwined, the intersection of a lifetime frozen in precious time and preserved in a digital tableau. Im blessedWere all blessed to be witness to a band ascending as true as an arrow shot to the sky.
Since winning the 2006 Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Contest, Greensky has been touring constantly, playing over 170 shows a year, and all the hard work is certainly paying off. Recent highlights are too many to list, but include selling out venues in many parts of the country, sharing the stage with musical heroes, getting asked to play shows with the likes of Tony Rice and Peter Rowan, Sam Bush, Yonder Mountain String Band and Railroad Earth, and being asked to play the inaugural Rothbury Festival in their home state of Michigan. It certainly felt like an affirmation that we are doing something right, noted bass player Mike Devol.
Greensky Bluegrass is Anders Beck (dobro), Michael Arlen Bont (banjo), Dave Bruzza (guitar), Mike Devol (upright bass) and Paul Hoffman (mandolin).
Eliot Lipp didnt choose to become one of the most looked to artists in contemporary electronic music, but somehow, Lipps sound, one that uses vintage gear to create a unique take on Hip Hop and House, has quickly garnered the respect among the industrys most influential musicians and producers as well as the deep admiration among audiences worldwide.
Since being discovered by Scott Herren (aka Prefuse 73) in the mid 2000s, and releasing albums on the cutting edge labels Eastern Developments, Mush and Hefty as well as backing the hype with a relentless touring schedule of influential live shows all over the globe, Lipp has quickly become one of the barometers for the revival of electronic music in the States.
Originally hailing from Tacoma, WA, Lipp paid his dues in the underground scenes of almost every primary market in the US, Europe and Asia, including stints in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Chicago before dropping roots in the Brooklyn scene that has continued to produce some of the most recognized artists in contemporary indie and electronic music.
Lipps signature sound, a crossbreed of 90s Hip Hop and House, 70s Funk fusion as well as classic Electro, has and will continue to breakdown barriers and transpose trendy scenes. Whether programming Hip Hop beats, writing dirty basslines, collaborating with the likes of premier producers, DJs, MCs and musicians, examined by SPIN, URB, Pitchfork and other media or playing popping parties at clubs and festivals worldwide, Eliot Lipp will continue to do his part in revolutionizing electronic
Anders story (his life, his career) is not unlike those of the other great songwriters and artists that he's been compared to by critics and roots purists Dylan, Guthrie, and Van Morrison, by the time he found New Orleans (or maybe it is the other way around) by taking the long way trekking through Africa and Egypt, working odd jobs to get to his next destination, he had the miles and music down to begin his career in his new home.
"Oftentimes the most true portraits of America have been rendered by those who have come from outside its borders, yet somehow seem to understand and inhabit our culture more than those of us who have lived here all our lives." JAMBASE
Anders has spent most of career since honing his songwriting at the same time creating a solid fan-base by touring the East and West coast as a performer, while dividing time between New Orleans and Nashville as a staff writer for the Universal Music and Razor and Tie publishing companies.
He's worked his magic for other performers, writing "Watchin the Wind Blow By," a number one hit for country superstar Tim McGraw and "I Was Wrong" and "A Better Man," both Grammy-winning songs from Keb' Mo's album Slow Down. Anders has written songs for Brad Paisely, Jonny Lang, Tab Benoit and Jimmy Thackery, to name a few.
"Anders Osborne artfully blends blues, rock, soul and classic R&B to create his own distinctive synthesis and original style." ALL MUSIC GUIDE
Anders hit the national scene with the 1995 release "Which Way To Here". He and his band began to tour the country and later that year he was signed to Okeh Records, which had just been revived by Sony's Michael Caplan. The record received rave reviews world wide and became Osborne's first commercial break with two top-five singles on the national charts, "Favorite Son" and "Pleasin' You." Both were featured on movie soundracks movies, the latter later recorded by Johnny Lang. Anders also recorded a second CD for the label, titled "New Madrid", which remains, unfortunately, unreleased.
Theres an almost sinister grace that pervades Octopus Nebula and their limber, unforced sleepwalk through deep groove electronica. OK, its not rocket science; a quartet of live players, all more or less graduates from groove scenes of varying success and commitment quotients, more or less plugged into samples/efx/laptops/loops, what have you, coaxing that uncertain consummation between the wire and the neuron. But the current incarnation of ONeb may take part timers followers a bit by surprise, in part because theyre barely a few months along, and in part because they sound like theyve been doing this together for years.
Through the ages of electronic rhythm & dance music spawns an new act is born - Break Science. Notorious instrumentalists & programming minds Adam Deitch & Borahm Lee delve deep to form a heavy, relentless performance. After years of touring & cutting samples for a variety of today's biggest artists, Break Science now implants these past experiences into a thought provoking, modern sound. This diversified duo has formulated huge bellowing electronic tracks, paying homage to the classic UK, U.S. & global beat classics.
As composers, they have conceptualized a monstrous live set for multi-genre crowds with inspirations originating back to the first days of electronic music, never playing the same set twice. Adam Deitch operates the percussive strike on both an acoustic & digital drum kit while Borahm Lee grinds circuit-bending sounds with keys and a variety of digital synthesis. Break Science transmits a stimulating musical experience during each encounter with their audience.
Their electromechanical sound brings distinct melodies, dark moods, a steady tempo and style that hits on the traditions of Hip Hop, Dub Step, Electronic, Drum & Bass, IDM, Breaks & Afrobeat attracting a devout following of all generations. The relentless attack of warm driving bass lines, synchopated beats, live breaks and rolling soundwaves captivate the mind and awakens the intense live dance setting.

Originally from Iowa City, IA, Eufórquestra (pronounced: yoo • FOHR • keh • struh, think Euphoria+Orchestra) relocated to Fort Collins, CO in August 2008 and has made a splash on the Colorado music scene with its progressive, genre-crossing funk fusions and a relentless tour schedule. Eufórquestra is quickly spreading its self-proclaimed Afro-Caribbean-Barnyard-Funk; a unique, rhythmic blend of sound, integrating such genres as Afrobeat, Reggae, Afro-Cuban, Samba, Soca, Funk, Salsa, and Dub. Eufórquestras music is igniting dance floors across the country, with a sound that explodes, dances and melts in your ear with sheer bliss (Chris M. Slawecki; AllAboutJazz.com). As percussionist and lead vocalist Matt Grundstad puts it, "we just want to make people dance.
In October 2009, the band released their third studio album, Soup, a collection of 11 tracks that captures the band at new heights in terms of songwriting, energy and production. In an effort to spread the album far and wide as an independent artist, the band decided to give the album away for free online at www.euforquestra.com. With over 1,300 downloads in its first week the word is spreading!
With three full length albums to their name and a relentless tour schedule (over 100 shows per year), Eufórquestra has created a presence on the national scene, performing all over the U.S. at clubs, concert halls, community events, and festivals, such as Wakarusa, Summer Camp, 80/35 (Des Moines, IA), Sweet Pea Festival (Bozeman, MT), NedFest (Nederland, CO), Montana Beer Festival (Bozeman, MT) and Iowa City Jazz Festival. In addition, Eufórquestra hosts their own festival, Camp Euforia, every year in July, just outside of Iowa City, in Lone Tree, IA.

As a bluegrass band that's anything but traditional, Mountain Standard Time follows in the footsteps of such Colorado greats as The String Cheese Incident and Leftover Salmon. While leading acoustically with guitar, mandolin, and banjo, MST brands its own style, boasting a big, full-band sound with saxophone, electric bass, drums, and electric effects.
The members of Mountain Standard Time hail from all over the country, yet their musical paths crossed in Nederland - a small, Colorado mountain town steeped in bluegrass music. Whether you chalk it up to fate or coincidence, music goers everywhere are coming together to enjoy the "explosive bluegrass" that these six friends and musicians have come to create. MST has performed all over Colorado and across the country, with appearances at Wakarusa Music Festival, 10,000 Lakes Festival, and the Telluride Bluegrass Festival contest finals, among other events.
Mountain Standard Time's roots stem from late night "picks" among the bluegrass faithful, making music lovers dance from mountain towns to backwoods campfires. Rich lyrics, original melodies, vocal harmonies and driving back beats have been moving fans across the country, while the band's unique charisma has been winning hearts.
Yamn is a four-piece, high-energy, smooth sonic explosion. They are masters of the modern day craft of progressive-electro-trance-fusion, executed with Colorado Jam Rock enthusiasm (Tonglen). In 2007 Yamns members joined together in Breckenridge, Colorado. Soon after the guys hit the road to do what they are most passionate about, play live shows and create an atmosphere for concert-goers exuding freedom and creativity. Ever since, their sound, stage production, and fan base continues to build.
The band is comprised of: Brian Hamilton (guitar, vocals), Adam Ebensberger (drums, vocals), David Duart (bass, vocals), and Ryan Ebarb (keys, guitar, vocals). Ultimately Yamn is a live band yet their self-titled, debut studio album released in October of 2008 quickly gained notoriety. The month following its release Yamn won the Jambands.com title, New Groove of the Month. The boys credit their recent growth and success to their unwavering and healthy sense of humor. Having the ability to laugh at themselves and place their egos aside has helped the members of Yamn to both evolve as musicians and as close friends. Evident in their recent battle of the bands success, Yamn has headlined some of the biggest theaters in Colorado and has landed on bills with some of the nation's largest acts.
Powerful and seductive is how Yamns sound is being described. The boys are focused and ready to continue on the journey upward. Not only does the band have the talent, but they have the drive too. As they boogie into the future Yamn plans to be on the road in full force. While not on the road one will find the band at home playing for the music-hungry Colorado residents by heating up dance floors and shining their expansive light show throughout the Colorado Front Range and Rocky Mountains.
MTHDS. Music That Heightens Different Senses, or, "the methods". Based out of Colorado, combine the fury of punk, the street-wise soul of hip-hop and funk with an over-the-top bombastic roots party groove. MTHDS have been booked aside The Roots, Ludacris, Murs, Guru, Everlast, 3OH!3, Asher Roth, Eek-A-Mouse, Groundation, Afroman, Collie Buddz, El-P, Warsaw Poland Bros, Whiskey Blanket, 40oz to Freedom, and many others. They also rocked the Honda Sessions '08 snowboard comp in Vail and the Mountain DewTour '09 in Breckenridge. All the acts theyve shared the stage with embody a wide variety of styles, and in each case the MTHDS sound has proven a complimentary and vibrant addition. -2007: "Music That Heightens Different Senses" -2008: "The Methods"
